About Us

In 2004, four valley women came together to form the Arizona Bereavement Alliance. 

Eloise Cole from Hansen Mortuaries

Kathy Guillen from Empact – Survivors of Suicide

Caryn Kondo from The New Song Center for Grieving Children

Lisa Weyer from Stepping Stones of Hope 

Their goals for the ABA were as follows:

• Establish effective means of communication for ABA members
  

• Provide access to educational resources to ABA members and the community through conferences, seminars and trainings

•  Create a network that empowers and supports professionals in their delivery of bereavement services
  

Then, in 2007, Barbara Joy, MC, FT succeeded Lisa Weyer as President, and was joined by Anne Bach-Starling, MA Ed., LAC, NCC, CSS as Vice President and Debbie Reed as Secretary/Treasurer.  Their three year tenure continued the growth and evolution of the ABA which included a quarterly newsletter and free membership.

January 2010 marked another leadership change within the ABA.  Kathy Sandler, MSW, specializing in Grief and Bereavement, succeeded Barbara Joy as President, and Ron Friesen, MC, LPC, CT, and Professor at Grand Canyon University succeeded Anne-Bach-Starling as Vice President and Debbie Reed from Catholic Cemetaries and Mortuaries remains as Treasurer.
